REFLECTING ON NUTRITION IN TIMES OF PANDEMIC
In this post you are invited to reflect on some nutrition-related questions and ideas related to the period we have been through.
I will write some of them here but of course you may come up with different questions and reflections:
1. Have the people's eating habits changed during this period? If yes, how?
2. Will your future profession have to reconsider some aspects related to nutrition and dietetics following this world-wide experience? If yes, pick up just one aspect.
3. What would be some challenges of mindful, healthy eating for this period?
4. What would be the challenges for people keeping a diet (vegetarian, keto, etc)?
Express your opinion in no more than 50 words. You can also choose to comment, agree/disagree with your colleagues or ask them questions. This aspect is highly appreciated.

ReplyDeleteTo my mind, what changed the most are our eating habits. I noticed that there are two extreme directions: we either start eating fresh fruits and veggies, or stuff ourselves with junk food, because it’s tastier and easier to prepare. Maybe the ones that don’t usually cook are the most affected, but those who keep diets may also find that certain products are harder to get a hold of nowadays.
Emilia, I like that you picked up just one aspect, not all of them.
DeleteI actually tried to touch 3 aspects: the changes, the mindfulness challenges ( eating junk food, because it’s tastier and easier to prepare) and the challenges for people keeping a diet (those who keep diets may also find that certain products are harder to get a hold of nowadays).I just didn’t give details, because I didn’t have enough words to.

ReplyDelete1. In my opinion yes , they are eating more just because they have nothing better to do .
2. Yes , we need to know what we need to do in times like this , situations like these can and will apare in the future and we need to be ready .
3. It would be nice if we were cooking at home more , trying new healthy ingredients and experimenting more in the kitchen .
4. Keeping a diet is challenging because its a big change for us and our body , we will desire to eat more and eat that we like not what is prescribed in the diet .

DeleteI agree that situations like this will appear again... Please tell me, considering our future profession, what do you think we can actually do, for ourselves and for the general public in order to be better prepared in the future?
DeleteNagy Sz.
DeleteWe need to carefully study and observ this situations . A good observation is that a big part of our society orders fastfood online more often and this is bad , if we are home we need to make our food , healthy home made foods are the best . We can help the general public with easy recipes and with encouraging to try new foods and to experiment more .
However, during regular daily life, many individuals often don't have the time to prepare home-cooked meals but during the quarantine, people had the time to do it for their better mental and physical well-being. In my city I saw several jogging people, this shows well that they spend their time in a useful way. A lot of people came to me to ask how they could make their habits healthier now that they had more time for themselves. Our mission is to help people who want to change.
DeleteDo you think there should be some information available for free to people in such times as they cannot consult a dietitian in person.
DeleteYes, I think there should be some information about healthy eating for free because people have some financial struggles these days. They could get depressed because of this situation, which could lead to bad eating habits, taking into consideration the pressure they have on themselves. Some advice on healthy foods would have a positive impact and help them cope in some way with this pandemic crisis. So, a little help goes a long way.
Delete1. Many people were isolated at home and preferred to cook more instead of ordering from restaurant. Properly cooked homemade meals are the best, so this habit should be preserved.
ReplyDelete2. I think we need to educate the public so that they learn to make the right food combinations and to make healthy choices when buying the ingredients.
3. Being separated from friends or society may end in boredom, lethargy or even anxiety. As a result, some people eat more comfort foods, others eat out of boredom or loneliness. These types of behavior are both unhealthy in the long run.
4. When following a certain diet while being isolated at home, it is important to find suppliers that can provide the proper foods. So, meal planning is very relevant to those having diet restrictions.
Diana, in point 2 you speak about "right food combinations". Can you exemplify with some right/wrong food combinations?
ReplyDeleteI think that food combination is important because different macronutrients require different digestive process (speed pf process, enzymes). A proper food combination should ease the digestion, improve the nutrients assimilation and also help with weight maintenance. A good combination is for example an animal protein (meat/eggs/cheese/fish-just one of them) with non-starchy fresh/cooked vegetables (like roasted broccoli with grilled salmon) while a bad combination is a starchy food with a fatty animal protein (like a pork burger with fries).
DeleteWhat are some starchy foods people usually combine with animal protein?

ReplyDeleteI think changing eating habits is the biggest problem right now. Why? Because people don't cook anymore, they say they don't have time or just don't like it.Most people prefer to buy ready-made food. But the biggest problem is fast food restaurants. Nothing healthy.I would like to draw people's attention with a few simple words-try to cook in your free time; buy healthy food; cook with children,;try new recipes; make a program with 3 meals a day.
Why don't we have time to cook? probably because we are not aware of the risks that may arise in the future
I agree. There is another trend: to deprive children of the charm of cooking. Dinners aren't like they used to be - a pleasant family reunion.
DeleteExactly, thanks for the support.(Moga C.)
Delete1 Yes ,I am sure they cook more, restaurants have been closed. The snack more because they are at home, and exercise less.
ReplyDelete2.Idont think it will e an influence just if we go back to a comunist portion food style.
3.To be concios of beeing carefull to eat wiselly.
.Fasting is also considerable verry helthy and good for weight loss

Szabolcs it was difficult to understand your sentences with so many typos! In 3 sentences I counted 8 typos/mistakes.
DeleteI believe that eating habits have changed for the worse during this period, people do not try to eat healthy during this period, people forget to take into account the healthy habits they have adopted before, but for people who are vegan nothing changes
ReplyDeleteIn conclusion people should realize that they need to eat healthy to stay healthy
During this period of isolation , people had the opportunity to improve their diet . Enough time to look for healthy recipes and cook , the opportunity to eat at fixed hours and restore the mechanism of hunger, the pleasure of dining with family . Whoever saw the full side of the glass in this isolation managed to find the balance.

DeleteI agree with this! Now no one can say that I have no time to cook. This period can teach you to develop a healthy life and a better routine. :D

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, if you want to keep up with the changes during self-quarantine you have to make a plan such as : plan your intake so you can avoid food waste, buy fresh produce like fruits and vegetables, avoid ordering food and cook with your family delicious and healthy meals. Even if this period is difficult for everyone we have to take advantage of free time with our families and change bad habits and make new and healthier ones, togheter. We can test our ambition or we can challenge each other in different games such as : who drinks a lot of water or who does not eat sugar at all. We cand do whatever we want if desire exist.

DeleteWell pointed out, Andra, if our motivation is strong we can do whatever we want!

DeleteYES, WE DO. Thank you, Carmen

ReplyDeleteEating habits should have changed during the pandemic if we want to maintain our body weight and health. It would be helpful to look for endorphins- the hormones that produce happiness- not in something to eat but in activitis that make us happy. This period in witch we were in isolation also came with ists good things in witch we could freely enjoy our time with the loved ones. We will definitelly know in the future what challenges such a lockdown brings and it will surely not take us by surprise and our profession, that of nutritionist is a very important one in the education of the population.

ReplyDelete1. Of course it changed like everything around us. This is a really hard period. It is not easy to keep our calm and health and here I’m not thinking just about the physical health, I reflect on the importance of preserve our mental health too. We don’t leave our houses and it leads there to eat more than before, to eat only because the conditions are those that are, because the fridge is near, to eat just out of boredom. I saw many memes on internet about pictures of human’s body before and after carantine and it didn’t look like a successful weight loss story.
2. We already knew before too that there were big problems with our way of life and habits. I think that in the difficult situations we tend to make more oath like I promise that after pandemic I start to eat more healthier. After what changes? Nothing. In these situations the fear dominate us. It’s like a new year vow you know?! :))
3. For me the sweetness, for others to reduce snacks in front of the TV means a challenge, to make sport, drink enough water. Everyone has a weakness which is difficult to control.
4. Keeping a diet is always a challenge whether is a pandemic or not.. :)
I definetely agree with the answers for 3rd and 4th questions .At first , every person has their "guilty pleasure foods'' that become a problem while keeping a diet . At second , a diet is not an activity just for the pandemic time , it's something that should be followed always, for a better result.
Delete1 I would like to think that they have change, but in a good way. it was such a great time to cook, to try new recepies and to be organised with your meal plan.
ReplyDelete2 We need to think that prevention is better that treatment, soo is't important that people understand that we don't eat only to look good and to be skiny, it's about beeing healty and having a good imune sistem and providig us the best benefits that it have. we need to take care of what we eat, how we live and how we react to situation that are not confortable to us. many studies and articles in this time of pandemic have shown that the most exposed people where the obese, the diabectics and the heart desseas. This sould be a wake up call for everyone.
3 I think bad habbits where even before pandemic, so maybe we have go further to them or try to change them. it all depend of how everyone have see this period.
4 I don't think that it was challenging for someone who have choose to have diet or a lifestyle like vegetarian, keto or simply making good choises and eat clean. shops where opened, online stores where at our services 24h, local producers delivering vegetables and fruits to our home. soo i guess it's just about how much you want to keep on the way you choose.

DeleteYes Diana, I agree wiht you about that second aligned where you spoke about the prevention. So yes, the prevntion is good. So ma nny people are fighting with obesity, wiht diabetic and cardiovascular dessease and they need to have some particular diet, to help them mantain a good health

DeleteAt first aligned, I agree with you that we have more time for cooking, as the quarantine time and social distancing were addopted. We have more time to spend with our families, even in the kitchen and try new food recipes or some old ones, from our cooking book. For me it was fun.for example I spent much time with my daughter , in the kitchen, we were cooking toghether, she learned a lot of cooking secrets from me, we also try some new recipes from the internet and we add some improvments, our original note. It was a great time spent toghether. So the pandemic time has it s good parts.
1)In my opinion people's eating habits definetely changed during this period , because the whole experience went through "The five stages of grief are: 1.denial, 2.anger,3.bargaining, 4.depression, 5.acceptance" , so let me explain . At the beggining, people ate a lot of junk food , sweets and fat food , just because they had much more time than usually so every time they feel bored , they'd go to the kitchen and eat something just to get somehow over it . After some time , when people found out that they start to gain weight because of their bad food habbits , happened this . And I hope that now many of them started to eat healthier again and to lose the excess of their weight .
ReplyDelete2)My future profession have to reconsider some aspects related to nutrition and dietetics following this world-wide experience, because this period taught us how to mentain a balanced diet , regardless of any situation.
3)As my other colleagues said , the cooking at home by ourselves is a good idea .
4)Of course for people who are keeping a diet there will be always a strong desire to eat something unhealthy , because everything that's forbideden is better than anything else. But keeping a diet means to be strong and well-organized , so people are prepared for challenges like this.
I agree with what you said at point two, our profession has to adapt to all the challenges we as humans might face in the future, and we have to learn from past experiences like this few months, to be able to have a healthy life style and a balanced diet, regardless of what is going on in the world.
DeleteIn my opinion, during this period many of us struggled with a healthy life style. When it comes to nutrition, I think there were mainly two groups of people: first group took advantage of the time spent home, and learned how to cook better and healthier (tried to have a better diet), and the second group who resorted to junk food because is cheaper and faster, its delivered at home and there is no need to cook it. On the other hand, a challenge we all had to face in this period was trying not to binge eat because of boredom or stress, while also trying to stay active when we were social distancing.
ReplyDelete1) During this difficult time, people had a lot of free time. Most of them have chosen to invest this time in the kitchen to develop their cooking skills. Which is pretty nice, because every family member can get involved to prepare a delicious dish. #qualitytime
ReplyDelete2) The availability of products on the market and their combination to create a healthy and various diet.
3) Due to social distance, boredom and anxiety people tend to eat more because it gives them an illusion of comfort. To combat that there are some solutions like: try to meditate, call your friends, do sports and try to take advantage of this free time to improve yourself.
4) I think that is hard to keep a diet nowadays, considering that there are so many temptations around. But is a choice that depends on our desire to have a healthy lifestyle and people who keep a balanced diet will not feel the need to give up on maintaining the health of the body.
1. I think that this period is the perfect possibility for eating healthier or getting fat and it only depends on us which one we will choose. Those people who want to eat healthier but in the rush they can't make/cooke healthy meals or can't go to get the ingredients this period is perfect to break more time for healthy eating habits. People who are weak or just not interested in healthy eating habits easily could become fat. I think I am trapped between these two types of people. I have more time for cooking and trying new healthy recepies but I can't run away in front of my grandmother's cookies.

DeleteI think the people have changed in time, not the eating habits. As I've noticed, most of the people have abandoned themselves, their bodies, they're not paying attention to their health. In my opinion, it is difficult to eat balanced, not only during this viral period, but also in general. If you look at this, brown sugar, for example, it costs twice as much as white sugar. I think it's just as challenging as before the viral life because in every day, the temptation will always be in our lives, so that we have to defeat time to time.

ReplyDeleteHave the people's eating habits changed during this period?
OMG, YES! I think eating habits suffered the most. Let's confess: we eat so much food in this period because we don't have something better to do. People, in general, eat because they feel good, happy and safe when they do this. You are scared? You are nervos? You are sad? What you do to feel better? YOU EAT. I don't hear someone, in this pandemic situation, that not complain about they weight. Why? Because we got fat. Why we go fat? Because we have so much time at home, we don't go out, we don't make sport and the calories are deposited. Maybe for some of people, the pandemic don't affect them, but most of the population do. For example, my mom cook so much in this pandemic situation just because she feel nervos, scared about the evolution of the virus or she just feel boring and want to do something to disconnect from the news.
During this pandemic period everyone was taken by surprise and no one was ready to encounter this situation. People all over the globe were and still are affected by it. Of course our diets changed a lot. Most of us didn't know what to do all this time at home and their first thought "-Oh, I should go to the kitchen and prepare something delicious and eat it while whatching a movie or do...." And we find ourselves in the kitchen preparing some junk food or sweets. After some time we realise that the scale is showing a big number there and we are starting to be a little bit stressed out. I've also have encountered the situation but I've realized that instead of going in the kitchen I need to find myself other distractions. I started to try new things like drowning ...(P.S.this didn't end well) afterwards I tried yoga and sports and this helped a lot because it also helped my mind not just my body.
ReplyDeleteIn stressful times like this one we should focus to have a more calorie deficient diet and most important a balanced one that's the only way to be friendly to your mind and body
The body will be strong if we eat healthy. We should keep good habits of eating fruits and vegetables, good quality protein- such as cheese, eggs, meat, fish. Sweets and flours, which contain many calories and few valuable nutrients, should be limited. Vegetables and fruits are rich in vitamins, and vitamin C provides some protection aganist viral infection. Vitamin D, required for a healthy immune response, is not found in significant amounts in food, and reserves obtained through sun exposure are usually low in early spring. Alcohol should be consumed in moderation. In fact, consumed by himself without friends. Even if it's not something to eat, it would be a good time for smokers to think about quitting smoking, as it is a risk factor for coronavirus infection.
