Healthy eating - Q/A session

In this post you are going to:
a) answer a question and
b) ask a question yourself.
It can be any question related to nutrition we have discussed so far or one related to healthy eating. The more specific the question, the better.
Answers should be short and to the point, original, not copied (50 - 60 words). If you want, you can answer more than one question but you need to answer the latest one.
Questions should be interesting and unbiased (remember, as future specialists, we have learnt that we need to accept different points of view depending on culture, religion). In order to start, here is the first question:

What do you think is number one culprit in the Romanians' eating habits?

  1. My opinion is that the number one factor in the Romania 's eating habits, is that they care more about traditions and the things that they are used to eat since they were kids, than their health. It is in our blood to be stubborn and not so open minded.
My question is: how can we convince people to encorporate more greens into their diet? And which ones do you think are the most accessible for our nation?

People often assume eating leafy greens must be boring and tasteless. But this should not be the case, as we can enjoy eating leafy greens in our meals and benefit from their nutritional value.I would say the first stept into convincing people to eat more greens is to make them understand the benefits of these products, like lowering the level of cholesterol, strengthening the imune system and improving the blood circulation.

Then, the second step is offering alternative ways of cooking greens in order to taste good, thus make them consume more leafy greens.
For instance, one can make a green detox juice by mixing all sorts of leafy greens with ginger and some fruit, resulting in a delicious juice. Another suggestion is pasta with greeny sauce, made of zucchini, kale and garlic. Also, vegie rice greeny rolls is a very clean and tasty opportunity to benefit from leafy greens. Simply fill the rice paper with all sorts of fresh green leafs, herbs, raw veggies and baked soy cheese and you will get a delicious meal. If someone is addicted to eating snacks you can suggest them to cook kale chips, by baking kale leafs. These are a healthy alternative to potatoes chips and are highly tasty. Another way is to put the greens on the pizza. Simply add broccoli and all sorts of leafy greens on the pizza dough and let it bake, it will result in an amazing meal.

My question is how can we determine people to lower the intake of meat as their primary source of proteins? How can we shift the general perception that only meat offers the required daily amount of proteins, and determine people to lean over vegetarian sources of proteins, which are most definitely healthier for us?

    1. Mihaela, your answer is very complex and interesting but way too long!!! Also you asked two questions instead of one.

    2. Hi, please excuse the lengthy comment . In my defense, when it comes to nutrition I tend to go crazy :)

  3. Regarding to the last question posted I want to tell that education is the most important aspect that determines the way they feed themselves . This is the reason why specialists have the responsability to make people be aware of the fact that alimentation comes with the most important aspect , health . Regarding to proteins , they have to make people understand that animal protein has a really important role in our daily meals but there are a lot of other vegetable protein sources that are much healthier and assure the largest amount of necessar protein intake . Now , my question is : what kind of lifestyle should we choose for mentaining a normal weight ?

  4. Gabriela Badescu ( Visan )
Over the past 30 years, romanians have experienced imported food , fast food, semi-prepared or canned food also fruits, vegetables and meat obtained through intensive agriculture or farming. Communism, wars and economic crises have been difficult food periods due to a shortage in the food market. Without a wealth and variety of products, romanian cuisine has not improved over the last 100 years. Today we are studying food, gastrotechnics, regimes adapted to religion, ethnicity, culture, yet we have not changed anything in our eating habits. How many centuries do we need to eat well ? As nutritionists how and whereby should we start with ?

  5. Eating habbits are some defining characteristics for each culture and are influenced by a lot a factors , like for example tradisions , religious rules , clima and so on . We don't know for sure when we can ray that romanians are eating well , or how much time do we still need to change our feeding habbits to some healthier ones and if we will at least do it . As nutritionists , our mission is to analyse all the influences and to advice our patients to adopt some healthier habbits , that can deffinatelly improve their health and posture . Also we can make some public sessions , where people cand get informed about statisctics and getv to be aware of the risks that traditions and other cultural influences affect our lifestyle day by day . My question now is : how can a nutritionist determinate a patient to give up its bad habbits ?

    ReplyDelete
  6. First of all, the nutritionist should show the patient a clear comparison between the benefits of a healthy alimentation and the detrimental effects of bad eating habits. Here they could bring out all the risks and diseases which can occur even from a very young age. It is also crucial for the patient to have all the support they require so that they can make the best decisions and give up the old habits.
My question is ' When is it necessary and/ or recommended to consult a nutritionist?'

  7. I think that one of the most harming thing that romanian people put into their bodies is alcohol. Most of them are unconcious of the food that the love so much, they know nothing besides the tase. I think that we should bring more "food conciousness" into their life and the question is "how can we do that?".

    1. Mihai, most middle aged people already know that they need to eat healthy. A lot of them have kids, which means that they have a high motivation. Also, about the other half, they are following the example their parents showing. You can not say that it is a bad thing, because they were eating quite healthy.
Yes, we should make some changes, and we will make them. Our advantage is that nowdays most of the people choose to eat healthy, because it`s "cool", which makes our job easier.

  8. As a response to Mihai Popa, I think there are many culprits in people's eating habits. I think one of them is that their eating habits are taken from parents to children, and it is influenced by their cultures, traditions and even by religion. We have to wait for a change to appear.

My question is "Is it healthy to lose weight by reducing food intake dramatically?"

    1. Sabau Cezara
Answering to Catalin's question, I disagree this type of "diet". Nowdays many people think that if you reduce dramatically food, you will automatically lose weight. You will, but not in a healthy way. Our body needs all type of nutrients, not in a exaggerated way, in a balanced one.
How can we maintain our weight in a healthy way?

  9. Answering the previous question I would say that there is no better method to introduce a healthier lifestyle or so to say "food consciousness" in people's lives than making them want that change by understanding the importance of the issue firstly. The question is how can we gain the attention of the people?

Answering to Hermina's question, I would say that we need to inform properly and often about healthy food and all the benefits of them. In my opinion this can be done through various nutritional education programs that need to be very consistent and well documented. My question is: "Why most of the people trust diets presented on Internet, than a diet prescribed by a nutritionist?"

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Answering to Iulia's question, I think the diet types on the internet are presented very tempting. They tend to show the world some fake pictures, and results so the average person thinks, its super cool, and worth trying it. On the other hand for many people, an apointment at a nutritionist, and the diet prescribed by her/him is way too expensive. My question is, what do you think about intermittent fasting?

  11. Costiniuc Karola15 January 2019 at 12:51

Answering to Iulia's question, with using the internet we can found more informations on preparing healthy foods (ideas, quicker ways), choosing ingredients, and knowing more about cooking, this would make it easier to eat a healthy diet. The Internet users, emphasis is on quicker ways by choosing ingredients and choosing a healthy diet. Not least,on internet we can get a diet more cheaper (but not every case right) than by a nutritionist. My question:What do you think, what is the difference between diet and a healthy diet?

  12. Hopîrtean Ioana16 January 2019 at 02:19

Answering to Karola's question,I would say that a normal diet is not totally unhealthy and it can be improved.
However,I consider that a healthy diet is based on food that have only benefits for the body. This diet includes lots of fiber and vitamins sources and implies avoiding all kinds of junk food.
My question is : In what measure do you think that people's budget influence their lifestyle/eating habbits?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Answering to Ioana's question , I believe that a person's budget has significant influence on his lifestyle, because a healthy, balanced and balanced diet requires the permanent inclusion of food from all food groups, especially with regard to their quality. Thus, healthy and quality foods often have higher costs which require a proper budget for their purchase. Of course this is not a strict rule and that a person can have a healthy lifestyle and a limited budget. My question is : What dangers hide supplements for weight loss?

  14. Maros Gianluca
as a response to Popa Ioana ketogenic diet is a diet that improves fat burning, but the reason of it is that you only feed fats to the body, being forced to burn it. Also it is not recommended for people with high blood pressure. What do you guys think about the famous Dukan diet

Answering to Gianluca's question, I honestly never heard about the Dukan diet, so I googled it. The Dukan diet is a low-carbohydrate protein-based weight loss diet that is split into four phases. We just learned about the recommended protein intake per day, so we all know that a too high protein intake is not so good for our health (it can even shorten our life). I strongly believe that we should forget about all kind of diets, beacuse we just put our health and lives at risk. Instead of following different kind of diets, we should try to resolve our problems by paying more attention to our eating habits and by doing more physical exercises. My question: How does bread influence our weight?

      Delete
    2. The bread that is available in the market contains many additives and flavour enhancers with no nutritive value and consequently, people eat more bread than necessary and it contributes to weight gain. Obesity leads to several diseases.
Question: How do you think we could determine people serving breakfast when they are used to have a coffee with a cigar?

      Delete
    3. Gianluca, you should have replied to Ioana, not starting a new topic....

      Delete
  15. We can't. Actually I'm just kidding, we could determinate people by informing them about the benefits and the relevance of a healthy breakfast. Not only do we think and perform better if we start our day with a healthy breakfast, but it also supports our well-being in many other ways.
My question is: Why should we get on a vegetarian diet ?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Plant-based diets have health and environmental benefits too. Vegetarians generally consume more fiber, vitamins and minerals, than omnivores do. Vegetarian diets are low in saturated fats, so we can avoid heart-diseases. Furthermore, buying veggies and fruits is more wallet-friendly, than buying meat.
My question: Where do vegans get their B12 from?

      Delete
    2. Asking Hanna's question. It is pretty hard to get it from every day food intake. So suplimenting is the best idea, even those who aren't vegans/vegetarians they could be deficient. Methylcobalamin is a good option for those who prefer not to consume animal products.

Why should we get on a vegetarian diet ? This is a very good question...and I will say just one thing-at the begining, when God created Adam and Eve, He told them that they can eat all the fruits and legumes from garden...for me, this is the most valuable reason for question: why should I became a vegetarian.
    Here is my question:
Which is the worst nutritional habits that we, as romanian people may have?

    ReplyDelete
  17. VILCEANU (AVRAM) ANDREEA14 February 2019 at 23:26

Answering to Georgiana's question. We are eating to much meat. Meat is an excellent source of protein and provides many important vitamins and minerals, which our body needs to grow and work. But if you eat processed or red meat every day in excess it is not safe, it's recommended to reduce this in light of the possible associations with colon cancer risk. My question: How much meat is safe to eat?

    ReplyDelete
  18. BUTCARU ( SERBAN) DELIA
The latest research from World Health Organisation states that processed and red meats can increase the risk of cancer, but it is all about quality and quantity. It is best to reduce intake of processed meat and red meat just once or twice a week and swap processed meats for beans(is less expensive and full of fibers and lower in fat) and fish-a great source of omega 3 oils. My question is: how can we cut down on processed meat when media advertise excessive promotes bad habbits?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Answering to Nitu Corina's question: In my opinion the best way to maintain your weight is to have regular and calculated daily meals and besides that you have to do some exercices every day for a healthy life.
My question is : What are the benefits of dietary supplements or the disadvantages of them? Should we use them or not?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Sometimes it is useful and indicated to use dietary supplements. But, as their name says, we should not replace our meals with dietary supplements. They are designed to complete some of our defficiencies caused by unbalanced diets or other causes.
My question is: Should we stick to a diet we found on google to save money or we should see an authorized nutritionist for a personalized diet, but with an amount of money?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Answering to David’s question, (When is it necessary and/ or recommended to consult a nutritionist?' ) I think a professional advice may be needed at any time and they are more secure than the internet. For example: it is necessary to visit a nutritionist, when you have an allergy intolerance; when you have tried every diet out there and you never see results; when you want to ( or you are committed to) change your lifestyle.

    2. Answering to Izabella's question: By eating more sugar than our bodies actually need, we are storing the excess as fat, leading to an increase in obesity and many other health problems throughout the world. When we digest sugar, enzymes in the small intestine break it down into glucose. This glucose is then released into the bloodstream, where it is transported to tissue cells in our muscles and organs and converted into energy.
My question is: How dairy products affect our skin ?

      Delete
  22. Answering to Nona's question: Dairy cows are treated with artificial hormones that affect their milk supply. Researchers suggest that those hormones may throw your hormones off balance when you consume milk products. This could trigger acne.Another theory is that the growth hormones already in milk naturally aggravate acne no matter what. Not all dairy products affect acne equally. Some studies have noted that skim milk is the most likely acne trigger.

    1. Corina Nitu Answering to Osvath Veronica, ( What do you think about Keto diet?)
The keto diet is proposed by nutritionists for those who want to lose weight to reduce epileptic seizures. This diet requires 60% fat, 30% protein and only 5% carbohydrates. The principle of this diet is to produce ketone bodies that replace glucose over a short epripida. Also ketone body production mobilizes the burning of fat deposits in the body without affecting the muscle tissue.
